UCL Birkbeck MRC DTP student John Mitchells Research visit to the University of Sydney!

I undertook a research visit to the University of Sydney, funded by the MRC DTP, to receive advanced training in processing algorithms for classifying daily movement behaviours with the specialist team at the Mackenzie Wearables Research Hub. The training focused on learning how movement data are collected both in laboratory and free-living settings, before processing this data and applying novel machine learning models to enhance the accuracy of 24-hour movement behaviour classification using research-grade wearables.

The opportunity marked the apex of my PhD, which used various types of movement data — including accelerometry collected in large populations — to examine its role in supporting cognition throughout life. As a new postdoctoral researcher in the field of physical activity epidemiology, this training equipped me with core skills to understand, apply, and even develop algorithms, serving as a perfect link between my PhD and postdoctoral position.

Most importantly, however, I embraced the Sydney dream, immersing myself in the beach-bum life! Thanks MRC!
